The Book of Galatians

After the time of Jesus’ life on earth, another apostle rose up by the name of Paul. Paul was the greatest missionary of the early church and went on 3 separate journeys throughout the Mediterranean region preaching this new gospel message. During this time, he was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked (among other things), and unwavering in his faith.

The book of Galatians is a letter (called an epistle) that was circulated around the region of Galatia, a Roman province at the time. Galatia was made up of several cities referenced throughout Acts and the New Testament:

  • Antioch
  • Iconium
  • Lystra
  • Derbe
  • Pessinus
  • Ancrya
  • Tauium

This letter was written by Paul to guide these new churches through teaching them concepts like the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control), in addition to God’s grace and it’s importance on how they should live.

The Book of Ephesians

A few years later, Paul wrote another letter to the church in Ephesus, located in modern-day Turkey. Continuing his message of grace, he counseled the people in spiritual warfare, bringing to their attention the need to prepare themselves for human and spiritual persecution.

He taught these practices through a spiritual armor analogy:

  • Breastplate of righteousness
  • Helmet of salvation
  • Belt of truth
  • Shield of faith
  • Sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God
  • Feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace
