THE BOOK OF AMOS
Amos’ message is one that we are still seeing preached around the world today. The prophet Amos spoke against social injustices of his time and warned the Israelites to repent or God’s wrath would come for them.
This was not the first time the Israelites heard the message of turning from their disobedience. In fact, the major and minor prophet books of the Bible are simply one man after another warning the Israelites. They’ve had plenty of time.
And time is running out for them to repent of their sins.
Amos has five visions:
- Locusts = God will put off his judgement
- Fire = God puts off judgement again
- A Plumb Line = He will destroy the high places (used for idol worship)
- A Basket of Ripe Fruit = God decides it’s now time for judgement
- The Lord by the Altar = God will destroy the Israelite kingdom (Assyrian invasion)
Amos speaks these words before the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BC and lives to see his people go into exile. Before he dies, he tells them that God promises to restore them eventually when they have turned back to him (and they will).

THE BOOK OF OBADIAH
A few years before the southern kingdom of Judah falls in 586 BC, another prophet named Obadiah speaks, but this time against the Israelites’ enemies, the Edomites. The Edomites were descendants of Esau (from Abraham’s grandsons, Jacob and Esau).
- Jacob’s descendants = Israelites
- Esau’s descendants = Edomites
Obadiah is also prophesying at the same time the prophets Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel are speaking to different groups.
