THE BOOK OF JONAH

What do you do when God tells you to go to the capital city of your enemies and tell them to repent? You say no thanks…or at least that’s what most of us would do…and it turns out an Old Testament prophet did the same.

It’s here in the book of Jonah that we finally meet a disobedient prophet. God’s assignment for Jonah the prophet is to go to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria (remember those horrible guys?!). Instead of going to Nineveh right across the border of Israel, he instead boards a boat to Tarshish (in modern Spain) thinking he will hide from God.

A dangerous storm breaks out not too long after he’s left shore. When he realizes the entire ship will go down as a punishment for fleeing, Jonah tells the men to throw him overboard. Thinking he’s sacrificing himself to save the crew, God rescues him in the form of a big fish (not a whale necessarily…) and he repents in his agony.

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:

“In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple'...

But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit. When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple...But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah 2

Once Jonah reaches Nineveh and preaches to the people, he is infuriated when they actually repent because God has mercy on them. It’s interesting that he thanks God for his compassion inside the fish, but is angered when it’s shown to his enemies.

Can anyone else relate to that?!

THE BOOK OF MICAH

Almost 50 years later, another prophet named Micah is called by the Lord to preach to the people of Israel and Judah. But if you remember from the other minor prophet books, he isn’t bringing all good news. He predicts doom and judgement along with hope and deliverance.

Prophecies from Micah:

  • Fall of Samaria (capital of Israel)
  • Fall of Jerusalem (capital of Judah)
  • Return from exile
  • Coming Messiah (Jesus!)
