THE BOOK OF TITUS

During Paul’s 3rd missionary journey, he is accompanied by Timothy, Luke, and Titus (among a few others).

Later, Paul is arrested and stuck in Rome. Once freed, he travels to Crete where he leaves Titus behind to lead the churches there. (Timothy is left in charge of the church at Ephesus and Luke continues on with Paul).

Shortly after leaving Titus, Paul writes him a letter to direct Titus in how to appoint elders for his church (just like he did for Timothy). He goes on to explain the importance of guiding the church to mentor the younger generation. The older men are to teach the younger men, as are the women in the church.

THE BOOK OF PHILEMON

While the book of Philemon comes after Titus, it was actually written prior to Titus’ letter. During Paul’s house arrest in Rome, he writes to Philemon about an escaped slave of his that Paul has befriended named Onesimus. Philemon is in charge of the church in Colossae that met in his home.

Onesimus has allegedly stolen from Philemon and run away, but upon meeting Paul, is converted to Christianity and wants to do right by following the teachings of Jesus. Paul advises him to return home to his master, but writes a letter to Philemon (whom he already is acquainted with through his ministry) asking him to welcome Onesimus back as a brother in Christ, rather than a slave.

While we don’t know the outcome of Paul’s letter, he lays on the guilt pretty thick and I had to laugh at a few parts when I realized Philemon is going to have a hard time saying no to this request.
