THE BOOK OF 1 TIMOTHY

The books of 1 & 2 Timothy are actually a beautiful collection of letters Paul writes to encourage his friend, Timothy. He is a man who has stood by Paul through hardship and persecution. Just in reading these two letters, you can tell through the pages how proud Paul is of his mentee, Timothy.

Paul appointed Timothy to lead the church in Ephesus, and encourages him for doing the Lord’s work and remaining faithful.

It’s in these letters that Paul helps guide Timothy through a few leadership issues in the church and give him advice on how to move forward. He gives some guidelines on selecting “overseers” (today you might recognize these as elders or bishops) and “deacons”.

Among the list of requirements these men should have were:

    THE BOOK OF 2 TIMOTHY

Paul points out the women in Timothy’s life (and names them!) that have helped shape his faith. If you’ve been reading along in your Bible, you know that men usually get most of the credit in its pages! Many women mentioned are without names. I was blessed by the small mention of these women who raised Timothy to do the work that we still benefit from today!

This spoke to me especially as a mother, when sometimes I need the reminder that raising children is a mission field in it’s own right! Here are the two women Paul mentions by name that were faithful followers of the Lord:

"I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also."

    2 Timothy 1:5

The second book of Timothy is sadly written during Paul’s 2nd imprisonment. He knows he’s about to be executed and wants to get a final word to his friend.

Paul leaves Timothy with these words:

“The time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me, the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
