THE BOOK OF HEBREWS

At some point right before the fall of the temple in AD 70, the book of Hebrews was written. No one is sure of who actually wrote this book, but the best guess is someone who was a companion of Paul’s, such as Barnabas or Apollos.

Hebrews challenges the audience to take their faith to the next level and live out their callings. It refers to the Old Testament founders of the faith and outlines ways that Jesus fulfilled their prophecies and created a new covenant.

Chapter 11 is a role call of the great leaders of faith and starts each paragraph with the words, “By faith” and tells of a person who held onto God’s promises despite many not even seeing them fulfilled in their lifetime, such as:

They each laid the foundation for Jesus’ coming in the New Testament. Hebrews outlines why Jesus needed to come in order to fulfill the Old Testament prophecies and to create a new covenant to break us from the curse of the old one.

Jesus is the Great High Priest, the one who makes us clean through his perfect sacrifice. The book of Hebrews is a witness of all those who have come before us and a challenge to continue their legacies in order to glorify Christ Jesus who rescued us from death.
