My Reading Challenge in 2023

Every year I set a yearly reading challenge on Goodreads and in 2023 I reached my goal of 35 books! My reading topics varied from goal setting, business, memoir, self-help, poetry, Christian living, and Christian fiction.

Here are the 12 best books from 2023 that I recommend for your Book Club this year, so go ahead and check them out!

12 Best Book Club Books I Read in 2023

1. Dream Big by Bob Goff

This is a great book to kick off the new year because it helps you set goals and figure out what you want out of the year to come. Using Goff’s spontaneous and optimistic perspective, you’ll be brainstorming and encouraging one another all year long from this one!

This book also goes well with Atomic Habits and Girl, Stop Apologizing.

2. Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller

If you have any entrepreneurs in your group, I highly recommend this one because it helped me clarify and simplify what my business was about and how to market, plan, and create content for maximum growth! Not looking for a business book? Skip this one and check out the rest of my list.

This book also goes well with Capital Gaines and The One Thing.

3. The Stories We Tell by Joanna Gaines

Do you like to read memoirs? Some of my favorite books are about famous people navigating hard things. Discuss it on the way to a trip to Magnolia in Waco, Texas, or conclude with an episode of Fixer Upper!

This book also goes well with The Magnolia Story and No Pain, No Gaines.

4. Breathe by Bonnie Gray

This book is a great self-help read which provides Christian tools and research on ways to deal with stress. Meant to be worked through in 21 days so you can start a text thread to encourage one another and check in along the way. Great as a Bible study too!

This book also goes well with Breath as Prayer and Emotionally Healthy Spirituality.

5. Liturgies for Hope by Audrey Elledge

This seems like a quick read, but I encourage you to have your group come up with a reading plan for this book to focus on making it slow and intentional instead of speed reading it. Using the Psalms as a model, these modern liturgies inspired me to write my own. Great as a Bible study too!

This book also goes well with Hope When It Hurts and The Power of a Praying Woman.

6. The Intentional Year by Glenn Packiam

This book is another perfect read for the new year. I also like to reset in the summer and read it in July to plan out the upcoming school year to stay intentional in the busyness. Great as a Bible study too!

This book also goes well with A Simplified Life and Cultivate.

7. You Are Only Just Beginning by Morgan Harper Nichols

Need a quick read? This visually stunning book of Christian poetry really inspired me in so many ways. Would be a fun discussion to have alongside a paint party!

This book also goes well with Dare to Bloom and All Along You Were Blooming.

8. Famous for a Living by Melissa Ferguson

I haven’t read a lot of Christian fiction, but this one was easy to enjoy! Feels like a Hallmark movie meets Sophie Kinsella. Would be fun to discuss in the coffee shop of a Barnes and Noble so you can shop others by Melissa Ferguson afterward!

This book also goes well with How to Plot a Payback and Meet Me in the Margins.

9. Bookshop by the Sea by Denise Hunter

Two things I love: bookstores and the beach. This one is a relaxing summer romance for your book club. Would be a good one to discuss at a waterfront restaurant!

This book also goes well with Lake Season and The Convenient Groom.

10. Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen

This book was helpful in understanding the connection of spiritual warfare in dealing with anxiety. Great as a Bible study too!

This book also goes well with Present Not Perfect and Girl, Wash Your Face.

11. The Life Council by Laura Tremaine

If you love personality tests, this book is a spin on different types of roles our friends play and why one size does not fit all. Will make you want to reconnect with old friends and acknowledge those you didn’t realize you had. Great for a Friendsgiving meeting!

This book also goes well with The Road Back to You and The 5 Love Languages.

12. On the Way to Christmas by Sheila Roberts

I started reading Christmas-themed books around the holidays a few years ago and it makes them so cozy. Discuss this one at your group’s Christmas party!

This book also goes well with Snow Place Like Home and A Vintage Christmas.
