THE BOOK OF JAMES

There are several James listed in the Bible, so it’s not surprising if you aren’t sure which one wrote this book.

To simplify things, let’s focus on three:

  1. James, the apostle and brother of John
  2. James, another apostle whom little is known
  3. James, the half-brother of Jesus

The book of James is mostly commonly credited to Jesus’ half brother. This James (like his brother Jude) was not an apostle and didn’t come to faith until Jesus’ resurrection. Even Jesus’ own family had trouble believing who he said he was!

James went on to be a leader of the Christian church after Jesus’ life and faced persecution alongside the other followers.

This short, five chapter book is full of insight we can use to apply to our lives as Christians today and many people study this book in small groups.

A few of my favorite scriptures from the book of James are:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

”With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praising and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be!” James 3:9-10

”The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” James 3:17

”Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:7-8

”Be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.” James 5:8
