Simplify the book of Exodus with this visual printable outline for the life and author Moses to organize the events from Egypt to the promised land.

The Life of Moses
If you remember from Genesis, we learned about a few important characters:
- Adam + Eve = Seth
- Seth’s descendant = Noah
- Noah’s son = Shem
- Shem’s descendant = Abram
- Abram’s son = Isaac
- Isaac’s son = Jacob
- Jacob’s 12 sons = 12 Tribes of Israel (Israelites)
The book of Genesis leaves off with Jacob’s sons being reconciled with their brother Joseph. Joseph had been sold off into slavery by his brothers, and in a plot twist, becomes an Egyptian leader).
Centuries later, a new Pharaoh who knows nothing of Joseph is put in charge and is threatened by the many Israelites (descendants of Jacob) living in Egypt. He enslaves them and later, orders the murder of all baby boys.
Enter the story of Moses…
Moses is an Israelite by birth, recused by an Egyptian princess who raises him as her son. When Moses is older, he sees an Egyptian mistreating an Israelite and kills him. Scared of the Pharaoh, he flees to the desert where he has an encounter with God to return and deliver the Israelites from slavery…

From Exodus to Deuteronomy
Here’s a quick overview to keep the storyline straight:
- Exodus covers Moses’ birth to setting up the Tabernacle in the desert after the Israelites are freed from Egypt.
- Leviticus and Numbers are more detail-oriented about the instructions God gave the Israelites on how to live as his holy people.
- Deuteronomy is a collection of Moses’ final days and 5 sermons he delivers to the people right before they finally enter the promised land.
Together, Genesis through Deuteronomy make up the Pentateuch.
