The books of 1 & 2 Chronicles in the Bible can be hard to follow, but here I help you relate them to the rest of the Old Testament.

More Than a Textbook…

We have to be careful not to fall into the trap of only studying the Bible like a school textbook because as a Christian, I believe that the Bible is the actual Word of God, that still speaks to us today, and holds great mysteries that we will never fully comprehend.

But on the flip side, you cannot fully understand the practical living advice in its pages nor the spiritual development and guidance the Lord is offering without having some sort of understanding of the historical context of these documents. I hope that I can help you with that one piece of the puzzle with these timelines, but I want you to know that I use them as a study aid, not in place of pursuing an actual relationship with Jesus.

But Historically Speaking…

I want to let you in on a little secret:

  • 1 & 2 Samuel = 1 Chronicles
  • 1 & 2 Kings = 2 Chronicles

Just like in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, they tell the same story from a different viewpoint with extra facts added. Each book was written to remind the Israelites of what God had done for them in the past. The events in the books of Samuel occurred during the Kingdom Split. The events in the books of Kings occurred during the exile to Babylon. And the events in Chronicles occurred after their return from captivity.

Chronicles in the bible

It’s ok if you’re a bit lost, that’s why I create these notes to help you break down the basics so you can follow the stories with ease. Let’s review:

After the rule of King Saul, David, and Solomon, the kingdom splits into two kingdoms, Israel and Judah. Eventually, these two kingdoms are overthrown by outside nations and each is taken into separate captivities.

  • Israel = exiled to Assyria in 722 BC
  • Judah = exiled to Babylon in 586 BC

Eventually, the Israelites are allowed to return in three separate phases, but more on that later.
