Winter Activities for Snow Days
One of the things I miss most about living on the East Coast is the snow days. We would get at least one blizzard each year and our backyard had the best sledding hill in the neighborhood! A few years ago, we took the kids to New Mexico for a weekend vacation just so that the kids could experience a real snow day. There’s something magical about waking up to freshly fallen snow.
However, many parents need to work from home on snow days, so besides playing out in the snow, what else can you do to keep the kids occupied? Here are three ideas we enjoy.
1. Read Books About Snow
After the kids come inside to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate, then have them grab a blanket and make a picnic of books about snow in the living room! Tell them to stay on their blankets and read their books while you get some reading (or work) done too. In addition, build a fire and some classical music for an even cozier experience. For example:
- S is for Snowman: God’s Wintertime Alphabet
- Cozy, Snowy Cuddles Touch and Feel Book
- I’m Going to Give You a Polar Bear Hug by Caroline B. Cooney
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
- The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder
2. Watch a Snowy Movie
I love a good theme day, so when the day is coming to a close, wrap up the night with a family-friendly movie that takes place in a snowy setting! (I recommend CommonSenseMedia for details on ratings and content) For example:
- Frozen (G)
- White Fang (PG) *some violence
- Surf’s Up (PG)
- March of the Penguins (G)
- Cool Runnings (PG)
- The Mighty Ducks (PG)
- The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (PG) *some violence
- Ice Age (PG)
- Happy Feet (PG)
3. Have a Snowy Snack
Whether it’s something to keep you warm, or something cold to remind you of the snow, here are few treats you can try:
- Eat ice cream
- If you have some fresh, clean snow, then make snow cones!
- Add three big marshmallows to your hot chocolate in order to make “snowman soup”
- Try Hostess brand “Snoballs”
- For dinner, have grilled cheese and tomato soup to keep warm!
