Trying to Follow the Bible’s Genealogy of Jesus
Navigating the Bible’s genealogies can be tough—those long lists of names aren’t exactly a quick or exciting read. Not to mention how many of them there are! The most comprehensive lists of the lineage of Jesus can be found in the gospels, Matthew and Luke. However, the lists changes halfway through and then somehow end up on the same person, Joseph!
Now correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember Joseph having anything to do with Jesus’ birth (besides taking on the role of his earthly father because of his marriage to Jesus’ mother, Mary). I want to know the reason for the discrepancies between the two lists and where Mary fits in.
Not only this, but these lists aren’t even complete–they are the highlights. To get the complete list of names, you have to piece together genealogies from all over the Bible while understanding what you’re looking for.
For example, there is an entire generation of people from each of the 12 tribes of Israel, but only one of them is Messianic (line of the Messiah). We are familiar with Moses, although his lineage is from the tribe of Levi. We know of Joseph and his coat of many colors, but it was his brother Judah (yup, one that sold him into slavery!) whose lineage follows through to Joseph and Mary.
So using this 581-page compilation of all the genealogies in the Bible from Zondervan Academic (alongside other resources and personal notes), I created a simplified version of my own Bible Genealogies Cheatsheet.
Simplifying Your Bible Study Experience
While these detailed resources are great for preachers and teachers, the rest of us just want the basics so that we can deepen our understanding as we read. My printable chart takes all the guesswork out of who follows the lineage of Christ, starting at Adam, making it simple to understand who’s related to whom without flipping back and forth through your Bible.
No more getting lost in the details or wondering how everyone fits together. I’ve sorted it all out, from the Garden of Eden straight through to the birth of Christ.
This go-to resource cuts through the confusion and makes the rich history of the Bible accessible and engaging for everyone!

Celebrating the Women Too!
Traditionally genealogies only mention the men who carry on the family name, but to have those baby boys, a mother must be involved…I wanted to give these women a name and include both parents in the lineage where it was mentioned in the Bible.
This unique resource shines a spotlight on the influential women in these genealogies that other studies might skip over. It’s a more complete, more inclusive look at the Bible’s family trees, recognizing the critical roles these women played (after all, most of these women are the ones who raised these boys into men!).
