THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS
Around 61 AD, the apostle Paul writes a letter to a struggling church in Philippi (located in modern Greece). The Philippian people are not getting along and Paul calls them to peace and unity. He tells them to become obedient to Christ instead of putting the focus on themselves and gives them advice on how to put that into practice.
Personally my most referenced book in the New Testament, Philippians offers the most encouragement of Paul’s letters. If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety or worry, you most likely checked out chapter 4:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be eveident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:4-9
I like to remember the main concepts from this verse as the 5 P’s:
- PRAISE = “Rejoice in the Lord always” v4
- PRAY = “By prayer and petition, present your requests to God” v6
- PEACE = “And the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds” v7
- POSITIVE = “If anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things” v8
- PRACTICE = “Whatever you’ve learned…put it into practice” v9
