THE BOOK OF MARK IN THE BIBLE

Let’s recap–There are four gospel accounts of Jesus’ life on earth:

  • Matthew = written by an apostle, directed to the Jewish people
  • Mark = written by a friend of the apostle Peter, directed to the Romans
  • Luke = written by a friend of Mark and Paul, directed to the Gentiles (non-Jews)
  • John = written by an apostle, directed to everyone

In my post about Matthew, we learned that Matthew was an apostle to Jesus during his ministry. He witnessed first-hand what was happening and recorded it. The book of Mark however, is from a secondary resource. It is widely speculated that Mark got his information from Peter (another apostle of Jesus) whom he was friends with after Jesus’ time.

The gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four, and many people consider it the “cliff-notes” version of the Gospel.

Mark mainly focuses on Jesus’ ministry and skips the genealogy and birth of Jesus. The book opens with the baptism of Jesus and ends with a short chapter on the resurrection. Mark gets to the facts and skips the intricate details (like we’ll see in Luke), and the philosophical narrative (like we’ll see in John).
