The book of Esther from the Bible tells the story of a young queen destined to save her people in a time of exile. I break down the basics in my printable timelines.

A Jewish Queen Named Esther from the Bible
Reading about a righteous woman in the Bible is such a breath of fresh air. Yes, we had Ruth a few books ago, but most of the women we’ve encountered either have been abused, get a one-line mention, or are corrupt.
The story of Esther would make an excellent movie. I’m sure with some digging I could find one somewhere…
In rereading Ruth, I see how well God orchestrated these events. There are so many ironies involved in this story and I would hate for you to miss them.

From Orphan to Rescuer
Let me break down the basics. You can follow along with the pictures above:
- King Xerxes of Persia divorces his wife Queen Vashti.
- He decides to select his new queen by rounding up all the beautiful young virgins.
- Impressed by Esther (secretly a Jew), he makes her Queen.
- Meanwhile, her cousin Mordecai, uncovers a plot to kill the king and tells Esther. She passes on the news and the king kills the assassins.
- A royal official named Haman hates Mordecai. He asks the King if he can annihilate the Jewish people, and he agrees!
- Mordecai tells Esther to ask the king to spare her people (revealing her Jewish heritage) and then she invites the King and Haman to a banquet to tell them.
- The night before the banquet, the King realizes he never honored Mordecai for saving his life and orders Haman to honor him publicly.
- When Esther reveals she’s Jewish and asks for her people to be saved, the king is horrified at what Haman’s done and has him killed.
- Mordecai is put 2nd in command and the Jewish people are saved.
Now that was the most basic version of this book and I want you to dig in deeper. Even this simple explanation is confusing, so I made another printable to help you as you study the book of Esther.
