Study the Book of Judges with this Printable

Learn about the time of judges when the Israelites return to a cycle of rebellion, repentance and redemption in this visual printable.

THE BOOK OF JUDGES

I have to admit–Judges was a tough one to get through. I don’t remember it being so…dark.

Sometimes a deep dive into the history in the Bible will take you into some strange and scary places. I mean, these are the people of God. He has delivered them over and over again. And still they turn away.

The time of judges is after Joshua’s leadership. The people are told to finish taking over the territories that have been promised to them. But God warns them not to intermarry because they will turn to pagan practices and idolatry.

At first they listen, but over time, they make treaties and bargain with the people instead of following what God has instructed them to do. And so a vicious cycle begins.

The Israelites become so corrupt and violent that the next generation doesn’t even know God. Over and over in the book of Judges, you see the following pattern:

  1. Disobedience of Israelites
  2. Oppression from other kingdoms
  3. Israelites cry out to God
  4. God appoints a judge (leader)
  5. Deliverance from enemies
  6. Peace in the land
  7. REPEAT

It’s cringe-worthy. And each time their sin and oppression seem to worsen.

There’s something about reading the Bible in order in a study like this one that really makes the characters come back to life. They aren’t stories in a book–these people are real historical figures. And they’re failing. Badly.

THE 12 LEADERS

God raises up 12 Judges (aka leaders) during this time that lead the people out of bondage. We finally get to see a glimpse of the Israelites returning back to their God.

  1. Othniel
  2. Ehud
  3. Shamgar
  4. Deborah
  5. Gideon
  6. Tola
  7. Jair
  8. Jephthah
  9. Ibzan
  10. Elon
  11. Abdon
  12. Samson

The Bible is a love story of a father who refuses to give up on his children. And while they fail time and time again, a Savior is coming! I can’t wait to read those pages especially after we see how much more these Israelites will continue to fail throughout the Old Testament.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA

Moses has died along with all of the original Israelites who left Egypt. The next generation has risen up with Joshua as their leader and God delivers them to Canaan–The Promised Land!

But there’s a catch…the land is inhabited by other kingdoms, which they will have to take over in order to claim their land. Will they trust God this time around?

As spies are sent in to Jericho, a prostitute named Rahab hides and protects them. She tells them that the people of Jericho have heard about the power of the Israelite God and are fearful. The spies promise to spare Rahab and her family when they overtake the city in return for her kindness.

But Jericho isn’t the only city they must defeat, it’s only the beginning. Chapter twelve lists 31 battles the Israelites fight to conquer Canaan. A few mishaps along the way give them some setbacks, but eventually God gives them victory and land assignments are given to the 12 tribes of Israel.

Study the Book of Deuteronomy with this Printable

Learn about the final speeches of Moses in the book of Deuteronomy and find out who replaces him as leader in this visual printable.

THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY

Whew! We made it. Out of Egypt, through the desert, and I can see a glimpse of the Promised Land. Oh wait…there’s that thing about not being able to enter it…

The book of Deuteronomy is Moses’ final farewell to the Israelites. It’s been 40 years since they escaped from Egypt and he knows he’s about to die. Generations have passed and a new one has sprung up. Only Joshua and Caleb will enter the Promised Land out of all the Israelites who left Egypt.

Moses is allowed a glimpse into Canaan, but dies before he can enter.

In these final 3 speeches, he addresses the crowds and reminds them of what God has done, the laws they must follow, the renewal of their ancestors’ covenant, and a few personal parting words.

Moses passes his leadership onto Joshua and the book ends with an account of Moses’ death and hope for the next chapter in the Israelites’ lives.
