WHAT IS GOUACHE PAINT?
Gouache (pronounced “goo-aah-sh”) paint is a completely new art medium to me that I have played around with for over a year now. This new trend of “doodle” paintings are usually done with gouache — those whimsical paintings of tiny collections are what drew me back into painting.
This unique paint is essentially a combo of watercolor and acrylic paint. It’s water-soluble, while able to create an opaque technique similar to acrylic. It will re-activate like watercolor and is easy to clean up, unlike messy oil paints. It reacts similar to watercolor, but dries darker in a matte texture.

ELEMENTS OF COLOR
Here are some basics to playing with color:
- HUE = pigment or color of paint
- SATURATION = the intensity of the color
- VALUE = adding black and white to add shading or tinting
I worked my way through a sketchbook called 104 Things to Paint using gouache. Here are a few of my creations (and times I broke the rules…)
