What the Bible Says About Fear

Join me in this four-part study on fear and anxiety in this printable workbook to help you cope with your fears in a healthy way.

GREMLINS AND BABY DOLLS

When I was five years old, I watched the movie “Gremlins”. Terrified, I jumped from the hallway to my bed to avoid getting clawed by the creatures lurking under the bed skirt. I laid frozen under my covers with my pillow on my head, trying my best not to move or breathe. I remember thinking, I can’t wait until I’m ten. Then I won’t be afraid of anything.

Then I turned ten and watched “Child’s Play” with some of my cousins. Before I climbed into bed, I threw all my baby dolls in the closet and closed the door. I didn’t get any sleep that night, and neither did my parents (who were not too happy about my choice that day). That night, I remember thinking, I can’t wait until I’m 20 and I won’t be afraid anymore.

Spoiler alert: I’m 35 and I’m still afraid.

Maybe not of Gremlins or killer baby dolls (ok maybe a little…), but about the responsibilities of being a “grown up”. As kids we dreamed it would get easier as we grew up, but life is so much more complicated than we anticipated and many times we long for the simplicity of childhood again.

When I was young I prayed for God to take those fears away, but instead he gave me coping tools. I would sing Jesus Loves Me over and over in my head until I fell asleep. As an adult, I still sing myself to sleep when I am worried.

DEALING WITH A NEW SET OF FEARS

We are stuck in a strange season of life right now. The entire world is on lockdown and we’re fearful, mostly of the what-ifs. What’s your coping method when life gets rough?

It’s said that the phrase “Do not fear” (and it’s synonyms) occurs in the Bible 365 times. One verse for each day of the year. God knew that our biggest obstacle in life would be fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of losing control, fear of the future, fear of what ifs…

But God has promised that this fear doesn’t come from him. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God did not give us a Spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of self-discipline.

I would love to encourage you as we learn how to navigate this strange season of COVID-19 and dealing with the fears that come with it.
